Transforming The Cozmo Experience With The Sdk

Posted by Mark Wesley, Cozmo SDK Lead, Anki | December 22th, 2016

It’s hard for us to believe Cozmo was released into the world less than three months ago. The response has been overwhelming to say the least, with so many families sharing heartwarming stories on how Cozmo has found a special place in their lives. He’s everything from a friend to children to a playmate for pets to even being a pet himself.

But while his unique personality enables him to be many things to many people, we’re only just beginning to realize the potential of what Cozmo can offer the world. See, when Cozmo launched, we also released a free software development kit (SDK) with him. The SDK enables anyone to harness our advanced robotics hardware and software technology for any project they can dream up. And in just a few short months, everyone from educators to game designers to creatives have utilized the SDK to craft their very own Cozmo experiences.

We’d like to mention one group in particular. Going by the moniker Cozplay, this five-person team of graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University’s esteemed Entertainment Technology Center has been developing wonderfully unique and engaging experiences with Cozmo over the last few months. These include everything from a dating game to integration with Google’s powerful Cloud Vision technology. Please visit their YouTube channel if you’d like to get a glimpse of how they’re using the SDK in new and unexpected ways.

As we head into the new year, we’ll have much more to share regarding the SDK and how it’s being utilized—particularly as an education tool in universities. Until then, we encourage you to visit our developer site where you can watch videos of other projects, converse with our rapidly growing community, and find the latest information regarding new features we’re regularly adding to the SDK.

The entire team at Anki wishes all of you a safe and joyous holiday. See you in 2017!
