Our CSforAll Pledge to Offer a Code Lab Curriculum

We originally launched Cozmo as a breakthrough home robotics experience. But with the addition of Code Lab last year, he’s become an amazing tool for children to explore coding fundamentals by creating interactive projects. Today, we’re taking things further by making a public commitment to offering a Cozmo-based STEM curriculum aligned with the Next Generation of Science Standards for elementary school educators in 2019.

Our commitment is in coordination with the larger CSforAll movement, which works to enable students in grades K-12 to achieve computer science literacy as an integral part of their educational experience. The full commitment is as follows:

“Anki, in partnership with the Carnegie Science Center, will develop a curriculum for Cozmo, a programmable AI robot, and their Code Lab platform to provide playful pathways for kids to creatively engage with robotics, CS, and STEM education. Anki is aiming to partner with educators, schools, and districts to identify opportunities to reach 90,000 students in the 2019-2020 school year.”

The Carnegie Science Center is one of the four Carnegie museums of Pittsburgh, and is recipient of the 2003 National Award for Museum Service. The museum “inspires and entertains by connecting science and technology with everyday life,” and participates in various outreach program in the Pittsburgh area. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with them for an official Cozmo curriculum.

“We know how much students enjoy working with Cozmo robots based on programs we offer at Carnegie Science Center and are delighted to be developing an official Cozmo curriculum for third- through fifth-graders,” said Liz Whitewolf, Director of Science and Education for the Science Center. “The theme for the curriculum will be space exploration, so in addition to learning how to program Cozmo robots, students will gain an understanding of how robots can help humans learn about the universe.”

At Anki, we believe in the power of creative play, and we know that children learn best when they create the things they’re passionate about. Code Lab is built upon the idea that coding can be a tool for creative play and self-expression. We see coding as a form of literacy where children can explore, organize, and express their ideas creatively by programming their Cozmo, and are excited to bring these ideas to more children in the 2019-2020 school year.
